Lightning cracked across the sky, brightening the night repeatedly but only for a brief second each time. The rumbles of thunder sounded like bombs exploding around me and the heavy winds swayed the trees overhead. The pouring rain made my weave stick tightly to the sides of my head, with several strands draped over my forehead. My shirt was so drenched it stuck to my skin, allowing my bra to be seen through it. However, I could care less. I just wanted to keep running as far away from the sirens as I could.

The sound of a barking dog came from somewhere in the far off distance followed by another. And the police sirens were loud and growing even louder every second that quickly passed. I could tell that with each step I took they were getting closer and closer. With each part of the dark woods I dashed through, and the steep hills I had to maneuver down, the red and blue lights continued shining behind me each time.

I took a brief moment to glance back. I had no idea what direction I was headed as my feet loudly splashed through a shallow, running river. All I knew was I was surrounded by an endless, amount of huge towering trees and desperately trying to find my way out. The sounds of police chatter over walkie talkies could be heard somewhere in the surrounding distance. I didn’t know exactly where they were coming from, but I could hear them undoubtedly. It was so many of them, they sounded like they were everywhere.

My heels had been tossed a long time ago. I had no idea where I’d thrown them or even how long they had been off of my feet. Both my heart and lungs felt as though they were going to burst at any moment. Each breath I took was more like a heavy gasp for air followed by another and another, no mercy. If anything, the act of breathing had become hard work the more I ran.

My feet and the calves of my jeans were caked in thick mud more and more with each step I took. I wanted to stop running. Every bone in my body ached excruciatingly and needed a rest. But stopping was out of the question. If I stopped, I would be caught. I couldn’t see myself doing life for the murders of Tyson and Terrell.

My focus was dead set on escape. I’d never run so hard and so long in my life. I occasionally clutched my stomach, hoping my child was a survivor and fighter like me. But the rain seemed to be coming down harder, making it difficult for me to see ahead of me. But I kept moving quickly, fighting with everything inside me to stay on my feet and run faster.

My body grew weaker, but I refused to stop running. Adrenaline and desperation continued to kick in each time my legs grew rubbery and I thought about giving up. Finally, I came out of the woods and found myself in someone’s backyard setting off their motion lights.
